On Tuesday, January 9, 2019, all commercial drone pilots were feverishly waiting to learn about the new regulations in relation to them. You can read the new regulations on the Transport Canada website as of this morning.
You’ll find the new rules HERE. What’s more, a new, super-easy-to-understand Web Portal is available for registering, taking exams and passing the new permanent COAS.
Extract from Transport Canada:
Advanced operations
If you meet one of the following conditions, you can perform advanced operations:
- You want to fly your drone in controlled airspace
- Would you like to fly your drone over passers-by?
- If you wish to fly your drone at a horizontal distance of less than 30 metres (100 feet) from passers-by
For advanced operations, here are some of the rules to follow:
- Register your drone with Transport Canada before using it for the first time.
- Mark your drone with its registration number
- Passing the “advanced operations” exam
- A successful in-flight review with a flight evaluator
- Be able to produce your pilot certificate – advanced operations and proof of registration when you fly your drone on request
- Pilot your drone within operational limits
You can only use drones that meet the safety requirements of the advanced operations you wish to carry out. See our tips for choosing the right drone before you fly one. If you hold a pilot certificate – advanced operations, it is not necessary to obtain a pilot certificate – basic operations in order to carry out basic operations.
A few reservations about the new regulations: DJI drones are not on the list of drones authorized for advanced operations. I will contact DJI to find out their position on this new regulation. Have a nice day Jim
